Building Africa’s AI Workforce: Vodacom Partners with UJ and AWS

In response to growing demand for skilled artificial intelligence professionals across the continent, Vodacom Group has launched the Vodacom AI Lab in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). This initiative aims to train postgraduate students through practical experience on real-world AI projects drawn directly from the telecommunications industry.

The lab will provide students with hands-on training in areas like network optimization, customer service enhancements, and data-driven decision-making – all using commercial applications. For Vodacom, this addresses both a business need (expanding their AI capabilities) and an educational one (developing local talent).

“The future of AI in Africa depends on developing local expertise that understands our unique challenges,” said Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO. “This lab will serve as a platform for responsible and practical innovation.”

AWS is providing the cloud infrastructure and AI services to power the lab, while UJ brings academic rigor and research capabilities to the partnership. The initiative represents a broader trend toward industry-university collaborations that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Beyond this specific project, Vodacom aims to recruit directly from universities and create a talent pipeline for its AI needs across Africa. This model is designed to be replicable at other institutions as well – potentially serving as a blueprint for tech capability development throughout the continent.
