Building the Foundation for AI-Native Businesses
Cape Town-based startup Verascient has announced a successful oversubscribed seed round of $1.2 million (ZAR 19.5 million), positioning them as a key player in building AI infrastructure for enterprises across Africa.
The funding was led by Founder Collective and included participation from prominent investors like Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, Summit Ventures, Alan Knott-Craig, and Shayne Mann.
Temporal Knowledge Graph Approach
Verascient’s founders, Keagan Stokoe and Emile Ferreira, are developing what they describe as an operating system for AI-native businesses. Their solution centers around a temporal knowledge graph that organizes institutional data in a way that makes it accessible to AI agents—effectively creating a ‘memory’ for these systems.
From Hallucination Detection to Enterprise Infrastructure
The company initially began with a focus on detecting AI hallucinations before strategically pivoting toward building broader enterprise infrastructure. This shift reflects the evolving needs of businesses seeking reliable AI solutions.
Currently, Verascient is targeting industries like financial services, insurance, and logistics—sectors where data governance and accuracy are paramount.
Scaling Engineering Capabilities
With this new funding, Verascient plans to expand its engineering team in South Africa, deepen its technology platform, and support additional enterprise deployments across the continent. This investment signals growing confidence in African tech companies building essential infrastructure for the AI era.
