Digital Transformation Accelerates in UK Financial Sector
According to a new survey from Lloyds Bank, 71% of major UK financial institutions now view tokenization as the architectural foundation for modernizing capital markets. The findings highlight a significant shift toward digital ledger technology across the banking sector.
Unlocking Efficiency Through Tokenization
The primary driver behind this adoption is the potential to unlock trapped capital and improve liquidity efficiency. By representing traditional assets—like deposits, bonds, and funds—on secure blockchain systems, institutions can automate processes via smart contracts and achieve near-instantaneous settlement.
Key benefits identified by survey respondents include:
- Faster payments: 60% cited this as the biggest opportunity
- Improved collateral management: 41% see value in real-time optimization of balance sheets
- Enhanced liquidity: Accelerating settlement allows institutions to redeploy capital more effectively
“Financial institutions have been focused on customer interfaces,” noted Lisa Francis, global head of CIB coverage at Lloyds. “Now, attention is turning to the underlying infrastructure. Tokenization enables safer transactions, greater efficiency, and new product offerings.”
Industry-Wide Technology Investment Surge
The focus on tokenized assets coincides with a broader increase in digital transformation spending. The survey found that:
- 77% of institutions now prioritize technology investment for growth (up from 41% in 2025)
- 64% plan to increase capital expenditure over the next year
The UK government views modernizing market infrastructure as a key economic opportunity, emphasizing the need to remain competitive internationally.
From Pilots to Scalable Solutions
Real-world deployments are already demonstrating tokenization’s potential. Earlier this year, Lloyds partnered with Archax and Canton Network to execute the UK’s first public blockchain transaction using tokenized deposits to purchase a digital gilt (government bond).
As institutions expand technology budgets and collaborate on interoperability standards, tokenization is moving from experimental pilots toward becoming the core operational backbone of modern finance.
