Smarter Payments Powering Future AI Agents
The payments landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with transaction intelligence emerging as a critical capability that will underpin future artificial intelligence applications. According to Mike Magennis, senior director of strategy at FIS, this represents a fundamental shift beyond simple payment processing toward more intelligent commerce experiences.
Magennis highlighted that while payments systems efficiently move money, the valuable data surrounding transactions often goes underutilized. He envisions a future where AI agents not only help consumers shop but also select optimal payment methods based on factors like rewards programs, eligibility, risk profiles, and contextual circumstances—essentially automating the entire purchasing decision-making process.
The Untapped Potential of Transaction Data
One key area ripe for improvement is how offers are presented and redeemed. Currently, consumers often face a fragmented experience with multiple apps and manual steps to activate deals. Magennis pointed out that the issue isn’t a lack of available offers but rather their poor integration into the purchase flow.
Transaction intelligence promises to solve this by bringing together all relevant information—purchase details, available value, and timing—into a single view. This would enable more targeted and contextualized offer delivery while providing merchants with better attribution data on campaign effectiveness.
Gradual Adoption of Autonomous Purchasing
While Magennis is optimistic about the future of AI-powered commerce, he cautioned against rushing into fully autonomous purchasing. He suggested focusing on bounded use cases with clear customer permissions, spending limits, and accountability frameworks—essentially allowing consumers to gradually build trust in these systems.
“I would start with more permission-focused deployments where there are spending limits that are clear,” Magennis explained. “This gives consumers time to develop confidence before extending greater authority to agents.”
FIS is already investing in transaction-level offers and item intelligence to facilitate this evolution, aiming to create a payment ecosystem where machines can understand the full context of each purchase.
