TikTok Redefines Social Commerce with New Agentic Tools
TikTok is expanding its e-commerce capabilities with the introduction of Buy Direct, an in-app checkout solution, and Shopping Assistant, an AI-powered purchase guide. These new features represent the first wave of agentic commerce experiences that TikTok plans to integrate into its platform.
The Buy Direct feature allows users to make purchases directly from their For You feed with just one click, streamlining the buying process and keeping shoppers engaged within the app. Meanwhile, Shopping Assistant provides real-time AI guidance on product details, shipping information, sizing charts, availability updates, and purchase options—all through a single conversational interface.
“These agentic solutions address key friction points in the shopping journey by bringing AI assistance closer to moments of discovery and purchase,” explained TikTok. “Shoppers can ask questions directly within ads, get immediate answers, and complete purchases when their intent is highest.” The company aims to keep users engaged from initial interest through final transaction.
The Buy Direct solution utilizes integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for secure transactions, while Shopping Assistant leverages advanced AI models to understand context and personalize recommendations. These features are currently available to select advertisers through testing programs.
Industry analysts predict significant growth potential for TikTok’s e-commerce initiatives. According to Marshal Cohen of Circana , “The consumer clearly has adopted TikTok as one of the few spaces of discovery and brand association.” Some forecasts suggest that TikTok Shop could capture 10% of total retail sales by 2028, up from just 1% today.
These new agentic tools complement TikTok’s earlier launch of the Ads Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables AI agents to manage ad campaigns without human intervention. By further integrating commerce functionality into its core platform, TikTok seeks to transform how consumers discover and purchase products.
