Balancing Innovation with Security: The New Era of Enterprise AI

As organizations move beyond initial AI experiments and integrate generative models into core operations, a critical challenge has emerged: data sovereignty and control. While the potential benefits of AI are clear, relying on public cloud infrastructure introduces risks when dealing with proprietary data, financial information, or personal health records.

The moment sensitive data crosses international borders or becomes subject to foreign legal frameworks—like the U.S. CLOUD Act—data governance evaporates. To truly capture the economic returns from AI, enterprises need their intellectual property to remain local, secure, and under domestic control.

The TELUS Solution: A Sovereign AI Factory

This challenge drove a significant architectural shift at TELUS, resulting in Canada’s first fully sovereign AI factory developed in partnership with HPE and NVIDIA. This initiative demonstrates how IT leaders can balance computational power with uncompromised data integrity.

The core principle is moving beyond commodity virtual machines to specialized infrastructure that addresses the unique demands of modern AI workloads—massive training datasets, complex fine-tuning pipelines, and real-time inference.

Key Architectural Components:

  • High-Density Compute: Integrated HPE AI Factory with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs delivering 22.74 petaflops of performance—the fastest supercomputer in Canada
  • Ultra-Low Latency Networking: NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand enabling efficient distributed training across nodes as a single cluster
  • Secure Edge Connectivity: Backed by the TELUS PureFibre network for ultra-low latency and high security
  • Validated Software Stack: Native access to NVIDIA AI Enterprise platform and NIM microservices through TELUS’s NVIDIA Cloud Partner status

Sustainability Without Compromise:

The Rimouski facility operates on 99% renewable hydroelectricity, making it one of the world’s most energy-efficient systems. Its advanced cooling infrastructure utilizes natural “free cooling” mechanisms for over 98% of the year, reducing water consumption by 75% and operating at three times the efficiency of standard data centers.

The market response has been decisive—initial capacity sold out within months—underscoring the demand for secure, high-performance AI infrastructure that aligns with sustainability goals.
