The continent’s manufacturing sector is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, with tangible investments across multiple countries. From ERP deployments in Nigeria’s consumer goods to smart factory pilots in South Africa and supply chain visibility platforms for Ethiopian textile exporters, the momentum is undeniable.

Yet, this progress masks a critical blind spot: the digitization of manufacturing laboratories — essential facilities that underpin product development, quality control, and innovation across all industries. While production floors receive attention, these behind-the-scenes labs often lag in digital adoption.

The challenge extends beyond simple software upgrades. Manufacturing labs require integrated solutions for data acquisition from specialized equipment, secure storage of intellectual property, advanced analytics for materials science applications, and collaborative platforms that connect researchers across geographically dispersed locations. These needs differ significantly from standard enterprise IT requirements.

Several factors contribute to this gap: limited awareness among manufacturers about the ROI of lab digitization; lack of purpose-built solutions tailored for African contexts; insufficient skills in areas like data science and automation within lab teams; and competing priorities with more visible production upgrades.

A handful of companies are beginning to address this need by offering specialized lab informatics software, data analytics services, and even complete digital transformation packages tailored for manufacturing environments. Government initiatives that incentivize lab modernization could also help accelerate adoption.
