The stablecoin sandwich model—where businesses convert fiat to stablecoins, transfer across borders, then back to local currency—promises faster cross-border payments. While the technical components are emerging, a critical element remains absent: a coordinated trust layer.
The Problem Beyond Settlement Speed
Blockchains efficiently validate transactions but cannot verify whether they should occur. A payment may settle successfully while leaving institutions with questions about:
- Who verified the sender and recipient?
- Were both parties authorized to transact?
- Was the purpose legitimate across jurisdictions?
- Which compliance standards were applied?
This fragmentation creates a scenario where payments can be technically unified yet institutionally fragmented—settling in seconds while trust information lags behind.
The Trust Gap Creates Risk
Imagine a business in Country A paying a supplier in Country B. Even if each institution performs its own due diligence, gaps remain:
- Can the receiving bank rely on the sending provider’s verification?
- Does the originating provider understand how the recipient was validated?
- Are both applying equivalent standards for sanctions screening and transaction monitoring?
These aren’t mere compliance details; they determine whether regulated institutions can safely scale stablecoin payments.
The Solution: Orchestrated Trust
As Mastercard Executive Vice President Raj Dhamodharan noted, “The technology underneath this is quite powerful, but that alone is not sufficient. To unlock the full value, really that orchestration needs to be provided.”
Until an interoperable trust layer emerges, stablecoin payments may remain limited to specific corridors rather than becoming a truly unified network.
