Salesforce Bolsters Revenue Management with m3ter Acquisition

In a move to modernize how businesses bill for increasingly complex digital services, Salesforce is acquiring m3ter, a specialist in usage-based billing. The acquisition will integrate high-volume mediation, metering, and rating capabilities directly into Salesforce’s Agentforce Revenue Management platform.

Addressing the Modern Billing Gap

According to industry analysts, many enterprises still rely on legacy billing systems designed for simpler seat-based pricing models. This creates a disconnect as their products evolve towards AI-driven usage patterns.

“Most companies selling software or services are running on outdated infrastructure,” explains Bhupendra Chopra of Kanerika. “Their own offerings have become consumption-heavy, while their billing systems lag behind. They’re forced to build custom solutions or miss revenue opportunities by not accurately tracking usage.”

The integration of m3ter will allow companies to implement flexible pricing models natively within Salesforce, eliminating the need for complex workarounds with external payment processors like Stripe.

Monetizing Agent Interactions and API Usage

Beyond traditional customer billing, this acquisition positions Salesforce to monetize its own AI services. Pareekh Jain of Pareekh Consulting notes that m3ter’s capabilities will be crucial for:

  • Metering API calls and data consumption
  • Tracking usage of AI agents and workflows
  • Enabling machine-to-machine billing
  • Creating new revenue streams from Salesforce’s Headless 360 offering

This aligns with the shift towards outcome-based pricing where customers pay for what they use rather than fixed subscriptions.

Operational Advantages for CIOs

The acquisition addresses key concerns that IT leaders have about implementing modern CRM systems:

  • Clear visibility into consumption patterns
  • Ability to set usage caps and detect anomalies
  • Accurate cost forecasting for AI services
  • Comprehensive chargeback mechanisms

With m3ter’s technology, Salesforce aims to provide a complete Revenue FinOps solution that gives CIOs greater control over spending while enabling new revenue models.
