Rivian Streamlines Finance Operations with AI Automation

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has implemented an artificial intelligence system on Amazon Bedrock that automates purchase order accruals. This initiative has eliminated more than 15 days of manual work per close cycle, significantly improving efficiency in financial operations.

Addressing a Complex Accounting Challenge

The challenge stemmed from custom manufacturing tooling—such as stamping dies and injection molds—which can take one to two years to build but often aren’t billed until 18 months or more after the order is placed. This creates an accounting dilemma where companies must recognize these costs gradually over time rather than all at once when the invoice arrives.

The Solution: AI-Powered Automation

Rathern than hard-coding rigid automation rules, Rivian partnered with AWS to create a system that stores accounting procedures as plain-written instructions. This allows for greater flexibility—finance managers can update these instructions without needing developer intervention.

The AI monitors new purchase orders, consults its programmed instructions, calculates the appropriate amount owed, and drafts accounting entries which still require human approval before posting to official records.

Benefits of the New System

  • Time savings: Reduced close cycles by 15 days or more per month
  • Scalability: Provides a foundation for supporting future growth
  • Flexibility: Allows policy changes without code rewrites
  • Improved audit trails: Makes financial processes easier to trace
  • Continuous learning: The system improves over time through human corrections
