Nigeria’s Innovation Flywheel
Nigeria has long been known as a breeding ground for ingenuity, where developers and entrepreneurs consistently create solutions to unique challenges. But in the era of artificial intelligence, simply having good ideas isn’t enough—nations must ensure AI reaches all levels of their economies.
While Nigeria shows strong appetite for AI innovation, adoption remains constrained by infrastructure gaps, skills shortages, language barriers, and regulatory fragmentation. A recent report indicates national adoption rose only marginally from 8.7% to 9.3% in the latter half of 2025.
The good news? Nigeria can learn from global leaders who have prioritized digital infrastructure investment, robust talent development, and decisive government support—creating environments where AI can flourish across sectors.
For example, the UAE saw national adoption jump by 4.6 percentage points in a single year after establishing clear governance frameworks and investing in foundational capabilities. Their approach shows that deliberate action can unlock significant acceleration.
Nigeria’s existing initiatives like 3MTT and Project Bridge represent important first steps toward building this foundation—strengthening the talent pipeline and expanding access to digital tools. With targeted policies, strategic investments, and a focus on practical applications, Nigeria can transform its early AI momentum into broad-based economic growth.
What’s your view? How can Nigeria best address these challenges to ensure equitable AI adoption?
