Payment Protocol Set to Transform How AI Applications Transact
The Linux Foundation has launched the x402 Foundation, an industry body overseeing the x402 payment protocol. This open standard enables AI agents, applications, and APIs to pay for digital services directly through HTTP requests—eliminating separate checkout processes.
Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 embeds payment capabilities into web interactions, allowing seamless transactions using various methods including traditional cards and stablecoins. With governance under the Linux Foundation, the protocol ensures neutrality, security, and vendor independence as it evolves.
Addressing a Growing Need
The launch comes amid increasing adoption of AI agents across industries. As these virtual assistants access APIs, cloud services, and external applications to complete tasks on behalf of users, there’s growing demand for integrated payment solutions that go beyond traditional billing systems.
“AI agents are becoming active economic participants but lacked a native way to transact securely,” said Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation. “x402 provides that foundation—a neutral, interoperable payment layer ready for digital commerce.”
How It Works
x402 leverages the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code (previously underutilized) to create a standardized framework for machine-initiated transactions. This enables applications and agents to complete payments during regular API calls rather than through separate payment flows.
The protocol supports:
- Paid APIs and digital content
- Cloud computing resources
- Machine-to-machine payments
- Multiple payment methods (cards, stablecoins)

Since the project was announced in April, 40 organizations have joined the x402 Foundation including:

This broad industry backing positions x402 to become a foundational technology for the next generation of AI-powered applications and digital commerce.
