Microsoft Streamlines AI Efforts with Unified Copilot Platform

In a significant move to compete more directly with rivals like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, Microsoft is merging its consumer and enterprise Copilot apps into a single platform. This consolidation marks the first step toward launching a comprehensive “super app” that will integrate various AI capabilities under one roof.

The unified experience began rolling out this week to Windows Insiders and is expected to reach a wider audience in mid-August for mobile and web, followed by Windows and Mac apps in September. The current Microsoft 365 Copilot app will be rebranded as simply “Microsoft Copilot” with a new icon and website.

Key Changes Coming with the Unified Platform:

  • Consumer features retiring on August 18: Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat, Deep Research, and Mico (the animated companion)
  • Minimal impact for enterprise users: Primarily cosmetic updates to design and branding
  • Foundation for a broader super app: The unified platform will eventually include Copilot’s chat function, GitHub Copilot coding assistant, Copilot Cowork tool, and new agentic workflows called “Autopilot” (internally)

CEO Satya Nadella announced during the company’s earnings call that the full super app is on track to launch before the end of September. This strategic push mirrors similar efforts by competitors like OpenAI, who are also consolidating fragmented AI services into unified platforms.

With over 30 million paid Copilot seats already secured (doubling from 20 million in April), Microsoft’s move positions it as a major player in the evolving landscape of AI-powered productivity tools.
