Meta Bets Big on Physical AI With Acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence

In a significant move toward realizing its vision for humanoid robots, Meta has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup specializing in AI models that enable robots to understand and interact with dynamic environments. The acquisition was announced Friday by both companies via social media.

ARI co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL) to develop the next generation of physical AI agents. According to Wang, ARI was launched just one year ago with the goal of achieving artificial general intelligence through embodied interaction rather than remote control.

“We believe this agent will be humanoid — and that scaling will come from learning directly from human experience,” Wang stated in his announcement. “Meta’s ecosystem brings together the key components needed to make this vision possible.”

Why This Acquisition Matters

The acquisition signals Meta’s serious commitment to developing robots that can perform tasks requiring adaptability and physical dexterity, like household chores or assisting people in complex environments. By combining ARI’s AI expertise with Meta’s hardware and software capabilities, the company aims to create more capable and versatile humanoid robots.

This aligns with Meta’s previously announced plans to build its own robot hardware and develop foundational AI models that can be used by multiple companies. The move positions Meta as a key player in the emerging physical AI market, where advances in sensing, perception, and large language models are giving robots new capabilities beyond traditional automation.

With this acquisition, Meta is essentially building an end-to-end robotics platform—from AI algorithms to hardware design—that could transform how humans interact with technology in the physical world.
