ERP Remains Core as Cloud Adoption Accelerates

As businesses navigate digital transformation, the shift to SAP S/4HANA remains a critical agenda item. However, experts caution that many organizations are falling behind on their transition plans.

According to Holger Schell, CEO of Corporate Business Solutions (CBS), a leading enterprise consulting firm, approximately 50% of large enterprises and mid-sized manufacturers in key industries have initiated the S/4HANA migration process. Yet, only a small fraction have completed it entirely.

“The 2027 deadline is unrealistic for many companies, especially those with complex ERP environments,” Schell noted. “A more achievable target would be around 2030.” He emphasized that the transition extends beyond mere technical upgrades and involves fundamental business process redesigns.

Hybrid Approaches Gain Traction

While greenfield (completely new) implementations have limited success, brownfield (upgrade-based) approaches alone are insufficient. Most organizations now favor hybrid strategies that combine selective innovation with existing infrastructure.

“Companies aren’t just looking to meet compliance dates; they want tangible business outcomes,” Schell explained. “They need to see how the transition will improve performance and create value.” This requires a ‘smart brownfield’ or ‘mix-and-match’ approach that modernizes specific areas while preserving core capabilities.

The Rise of Business AI

With SAP increasingly emphasizing its ‘Business Technology Platform,’ companies can now extend their ERP systems with cloud-based applications and services. This allows for greater flexibility and innovation without disrupting the foundation.

“The key is to treat your ERP as a data core that powers broader business processes,” Schell stated. “By leveraging this data strategically, companies can unlock new efficiencies and create competitive advantages.” He added that SAP’s focus on ‘business AI’—using enterprise data to drive intelligent automation—represents a significant opportunity for organizations seeking digital transformation.

Looking Ahead

The transition to S/4HANA is not just about technology; it’s about fundamentally reimagining how businesses operate in the digital age. While challenges remain, those who embrace this shift strategically will be best positioned for long-term success.
