Flutterwave Integrates Stablecoins with Strategic Investment from Ripple

In a significant move set to transform digital payments across Africa, Flutterwave, the leading payment infrastructure provider, has secured a strategic investment from Ripple. This partnership integrates RLUSD, Ripple’s U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, into Flutterwave’s existing network that spans 34 African countries.

The integration creates a “stablecoin-first” architecture designed to address inefficiencies in cross-border transactions—reducing delays and costs associated with traditional payment methods. By embedding RLUSD directly into its payment rails and Send App remittance product, Flutterwave aims to provide faster, more predictable settlement options for businesses and individuals alike.

Key Components of the Partnership:

  • Stablecoin Integration: RLUSD will serve as a primary settlement asset for high-volume transfer corridors
  • XRP Ledger Technology: Utilizing Ripple’s blockchain network for quicker transaction clearing
  • Unified API: Connecting Flutterwave’s domestic payments with Ripple Payments for seamless international transfers

Reece Merrick, Ripple’s managing director for the Middle East and Africa, emphasized that this investment anchors RLUSD within Flutterwave’s infrastructure—positioning the company to drive stablecoin adoption across the continent while expanding access to global payment networks.

Implications for African Commerce:

This partnership arrives as interest in dollar-backed stablecoins rises sharply across Africa, driven by both hedging against currency volatility and seeking faster alternatives to traditional bank transfers. By offering real-time settlement with predictable pricing, Flutterwave’s integration could unlock new levels of efficiency for businesses engaged in cross-border trade.

Flutterwave founder Olugbenga “GB” Agboola described the investment as enabling greater scalability and connecting African commerce more directly with the global economy. With over $500 million raised to date, Flutterwave has processed billions in transactions for clients like Uber, Air Peace, and Bamboo—reaching millions across 34 countries.
