Modernizing Payments: Flutterwave Partners with Circle Ventures for USDC Expansion
Leading African payments technology provider, Flutterwave, has secured a strategic investment from Circle Ventures—the corporate venture arm of Circle Internet Group. This funding will accelerate Flutterwave’s efforts to integrate USDC (a USD-pegged stablecoin) directly into existing payment workflows across the continent.
The Opportunity for Stablecoins in Africa
Flutterwave, which has processed over $40 billion in payments and facilitated more than 1 billion transactions since its launch in 2016, sees stablecoins as critical infrastructure for modernizing financial systems. By enabling merchants to collect local currency but settle in USDC, the company aims to reduce settlement delays, lower costs, and provide near-instant global payouts.
Key Benefits of USDC Integration:
- Faster settlements: Move money at internet speed rather than traditional banking timelines
- Reduced costs: Minimize transaction fees associated with currency conversions and international transfers
- Extended operating hours: Enable payments beyond standard banking hours
- Improved transparency: Leverage blockchain technology for auditable payment trails
This investment follows Flutterwave’s recent Series E funding round, which valued the company at $3.2 billion. It also builds on their collaboration through the Circle Payments Network set to launch in 2025.
“Stablecoins like USDC are no longer experimental; they’re becoming core financial infrastructure,” stated Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, Flutterwave’s founder and CEO. “By embedding USDC settlement into our existing payments infrastructure, we’re building a system that connects businesses to the world at unprecedented speed.”
This move positions Flutterwave as a key gateway for stablecoin adoption in Africa, offering enterprises a compliant framework for utilizing blockchain-based payment solutions.
