Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey Steps Down Amidst AI Transformation

In a surprising turn of events, Coca-Cola’s long-time CEO James Quincey announced he will step down on Tuesday, March 31. While the company has publicly framed this as part of a planned succession process, Quincey revealed in an interview with CNBC that generative AI played a significant role in his decision.

“My job is also to think who’s the best team to put on the field to get the next wave done,” Quincey explained. “I concluded that it was time to put someone else on the field for the next wave of growth.” He noted that while Coca-Cola achieved substantial progress before the rise of AI, this new technology represents a “huge shift” requiring fresh leadership.

Quincey’s departure comes as companies across industries grapple with how generative AI will reshape their operations and competitive landscapes. While he expressed optimism about technological advances, he believes the company needs someone with “the energy to pursue a completely new transformation of the enterprise.” His successor, Henrique Braun, currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

This isn’t the first time AI considerations have factored into CEO transitions. Former Walmart CEO Douglas McMillon similarly cited the need for leadership equipped to navigate the coming wave of AI-driven change when announcing his departure in December 2025.
