Navigating the New Digital Imperative

The CIO role in Canadian enterprises is undergoing a fundamental shift. While operational efficiency remains important, technology leaders are now expected to drive competitive advantage and create tangible business value—a mandate that extends beyond cost-cutting.

Recent data from KPMG’s 2026 Global Tech Report indicates this expectation is warranted: 91% of Canadian tech leaders believe advanced technologies will be the primary driver of competitive differentiation in the next three years. Yet, only 27% currently identify as innovators or early adopters, suggesting a significant opportunity gap.

The Data Foundation Challenge

One critical imperative for success is modernizing enterprise data infrastructure. While organizations have invested in digital capabilities over the past decade, much of this data remains siloed in legacy systems, limiting accessibility for advanced applications like AI.

“CIOs need to truly and deeply understand the value chain of what their organizations do,” says Sanjay Pathak, partner at KPMG Canada. “Those who get there will have the imagination, the courage, and the foresight to use technology to transform their businesses.”

Beyond Technical Hurdles

The path to digital transformation extends beyond technical implementation. Organizations must also bridge talent gaps between AI specialists and those with deep institutional knowledge—ensuring that innovation aligns with business needs.

Furthermore, communicating value requires reframing ROI metrics. Rather than focusing solely on technology-specific measures, CIOs should emphasize the impact on customer experience, revenue growth, and employee adoption.

Governance for Sustainable Innovation

A disciplined approach to governance is essential for realizing long-term value from digital investments. Bringing together business, technology, risk, and compliance leaders early in the process helps ensure that new solutions are both effective and sustainable.

The organizations that prioritize holistic business ambition—efficient delivery, operations, and compliant design—will be best positioned to capture the competitive advantages of emerging technologies.
