BlueBic: Taking the Admin Burden Off Nigerian Teachers
Nigerian startup BlueBic has quietly built a comprehensive school information system (SIS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform for K-12 schools across Nigeria, reaching over 190 partner institutions without raising external venture capital. Founded in 2015 by Favourite Onwuemene, the company addresses key pain points in education administration.
Automated Grading & Reporting
BlueBic automates cumulative grade calculations (first, second, and third terms) according to Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) standards. What once took teachers up to two weeks can now be completed in under 10 minutes, generating Ministry-compliant reports.
Streamlined Fee Management
The platform integrates with Paystack for digital invoicing, automated reconciliation, and instant receipts, helping schools reduce tuition leakage and administrative fraud.
Offline Resilience
As a progressive web app (PWA), BlueBic allows teachers to record data even without internet access—attendance, scores, student records all sync automatically when connectivity returns. This is particularly crucial in areas with unreliable power or network infrastructure.
“Teachers were spending over 50% of their time on repetitive paperwork instead of teaching,” Onwuemene explained. “Manual registers would get lost or damaged, while tuition leakage was common due to manipulated receipts.”
Designed for Simplicity & Scalability
Unlike complex legacy systems, BlueBic features a clean interface that feels familiar to users accustomed to spreadsheets—making adoption faster and more intuitive.
The startup has grown through word-of-mouth referrals as schools experience the benefits firsthand. Currently serving over 45,000 students across six states (Lagos, Abuja, Delta, Edo, Ogun, Rivers), BlueBic is profitable and cash-flow positive through its transparent subscription model.
With plans to expand into Ghana, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—countries that share similar WAEC examination structures—BlueBic aims to become the leading operational platform for schools across West Africa.
