Apple Prepares Next-Generation Macs to Capitalize on AI Demand

Following a recent resurgence in sales, Apple is reportedly planning a comprehensive overhaul of its Mac product line. According to Bloomberg News, the company intends to release updated versions of all current models—including desktops, laptops, and the popular MacBook Pro—over the next few years, with initial launches expected this fall and continuing through 2027.

The first devices in this new wave will feature Apple’s upcoming M6 chip alongside other significant upgrades. The revamped lineup is anticipated to include:

  • New iMac models (the first update in two years)
  • An updated low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro
  • Future iterations of the MacBook Air and higher-end MacBook Pros
  • Desktop updates for both Mac mini and Mac Studio models

Supply Constraints Challenge Timely Launches

While demand for Macs has been rising, particularly among users running AI applications, Apple faces manufacturing challenges. A shortage of memory chips has led to price increases across the product range. Some configurations of the Mac mini and Mac Studio currently have shipping times extending beyond three months.

CEO Tim Cook acknowledged these supply constraints in April, stating it could take “several months” for production to meet demand. He noted that soaring component costs—particularly memory chips—have created an unprecedented situation in his 40 years with the company.

Strategic Pricing and New Leasing Program

Apple has already implemented price increases on several products (excluding iPhones) to offset rising manufacturing expenses. The company is also preparing to launch Apple Upgrade, a leasing program that will allow customers to subscribe to devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

The new lease service offers flexibility for users who want to upgrade frequently or return devices at the end of their term—similar to how car leases work.
