Veeam Software has officially unveiled the New Veeam Data Platform 23H2 update and the latest Veeam Backup & Replication v12.1 release during the global VeeamON Resiliency Summit.
This groundbreaking update, based on the pillars of Data Security, Data Recovery, and Data Freedom, introduces enhanced data security, malware detection, automated recovery, and hybrid cloud capabilities. These advancements are aimed at ensuring business continuity, particularly in the face of the growing menace of ransomware and cyberattacks.
Danny Allan, CTO at Veeam, emphasized the evolving threat landscape, stating, “Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are now targeting backups. According to the Veeam 2023 Ransomware Trends report, a staggering 93% of ransomware attacks focus on compromising backups, with 75% of these attacks achieving at least partial success. The reason for targeting backups is that organizations are more likely to pay ransoms when hackers successfully delete or encrypt backup data.”
He further emphasized the importance of trusted, clean backups in a comprehensive cyber-resiliency strategy, allowing for quick incident response and recovery. The new Veeam Data Platform 23H2 Update aims not just to restore after an incident but to move forward swiftly. This update narrows the gap between the incident and recovery, enabling customers to maintain their business’s growth and progress.
Veeam continues to lead in data protection and ransomware recovery by delivering innovative solutions that address the ever-changing needs of modern businesses.
The Veeam Data Platform 23H2 update encompasses new security and ransomware protection features for Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, and Veeam Recovery Orchestrator.
This release introduces advanced data security, malware detection, automated recovery, and hybrid cloud capabilities across the entire hybrid cloud environment. Veeam Backup & Replication v12.1, the foundation of the Veeam Data Platform, is now equipped to further reduce incident response times by proactively hunting for threats in backups, integrating with SIEM platforms, implementing YARA rules for detecting ransomware patterns, and offering guidance to help customers adhere to NIST cybersecurity best practices.
The new cybersecurity features and enhancements in the Veeam Data Platform 23H2 Update are tailored to assist organizations in preparing for and handling security incidents. They unite IT and security teams, empowering them to confront, contain, and conquer ransomware. Some of these new features include:
– Detecting and identifying cyber threats: AI-powered Malware Detection conducts low-impact inline entropy and file extension analysis during backups for immediate detection. SIEM tools can report infections directly through the Veeam Incident API, marking existing restore points as infected or triggering out-of-band backups.
– Rapid response and recovery from ransomware: Point-in-time recovery, with the help of the I/O Anomaly Visualizer, ensures minimal data loss through Veeam’s continuous data protection (CDP). YARA content analysis helps prevent reinfection, while automated clean recovery leverages malware-free restore points.
The new Veeam Threat Center highlights threats, risk assessment, and security scoring of your environment. The Security & Compliance Analyzer automates scans, ensuring recovery success. Expanded immutability support safeguards backups against accidental or malicious deletion or encryption, featuring “four-eyes” backup protection and immutable backups.
During the VeeamON Resiliency Summit keynote, Allan provided a glimpse into forthcoming Veeam product releases for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. He also teased the upcoming Kasten K10 6.5 launch. Veeam’s history of innovation includes the recent announcements of BaaS for Microsoft 365 and Azure, with plans for a new release of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 in early 2024.
