The COP28 launch of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) highlighted the global commitment to combat climate change in the oil and gas sectors. With over 50 companies signing, including major National Oil Companies, the charter aims to implement best practices by 2030, targeting a collective reduction in emission intensity.
The International Energy Agency notes that proven measures can reduce emissions by over 75% in the oil and gas sector. Technologies like Welltec’s Metal Expandable Packers (MEP) address well integrity issues, significantly contributing to mitigating methane emissions. Welltec’s MEPs, deployed in over 1,000 instances worldwide, have demonstrated effectiveness, including trials in ADNOC’s Bab field, showcasing their ability to halt methane leakage.
These innovations mark a departure from traditional methods like cementing, aligning with the industry’s modern focus on environmental sustainability. As the OGDC sets ambitious emission reduction targets, technological advancements, particularly in addressing methane emissions, will play a pivotal role in achieving these goals. The oil and gas industry is entering a transformative phase, emphasizing the importance of technology in minimizing environmental impact.
