According to the HSBC’s- Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’s latest report and update from the IEC’s live results Online Dashboard on SA’s NPE 2024, the ANC- African National Congress appears poised to lose its three-decade-long parliamentary majority following a significant decrease in support during South Africa’s seventh democratic elections. At 42%, the share of votes falls towards the lower end of anticipated outcomes, a development that could intensify the difficulty of establishing the nation’s inaugural national coalition. Market reactions to the uncertainty were unfavorable, with the rand depreciating by approximately 2% and equity markets experiencing a 1.7% decline as election results unfolded on May 30th.
DA, official position
“The polling stations closed at 9 pm on Wednesday, May 29th, and by the beginning of May 31st, nearly half of the votes had been counted, revealing a decline of over 15 percentage points for the ANC compared to the 57% it garnered in 2019. The DA- Democratic Alliance appears poised to maintain its position as the official opposition, having received approximately 24% of the counted votes thus far. The newly established MK- uMkhonto weSizwe Party follows with around 11%, while the EFF- Economic Freedom Fighters have garnered just under 10%. The remaining 13-14% of the vote is distributed among smaller parties, with the PA- Patriotic Alliance, IFP- Inkatha Freedom Party, FF+ -Freedom Front Plus, and ASA- ActionSA among those enjoying significant support. Several other minor parties could secure one or two seats in the National Assembly.” continues HSBC
“Turnout seems to have dropped below 60% from the 66% recorded in 2019. The ANC usually fares better when turnout is lower, but this decrease seems to have provided little buffer for the party’s support.” concludes HSBC
New kid on the block’s exceptional performance
According to the latest data, the MK Party’s portion of the provincial vote in KZN has actually increased overnight.
Now, they hold approximately 45% of the votes on the provincial ballot, up from the roughly 43% they had by the end of Thursday night.
Competing parties were banking on their strongholds in the eThekwini metro to provide an advantage.
However, examining the map today- Friday morning, it’s evident that MK is making gains, as several pink patches begin to appear- refer to IEC Dashboard.
